Course in oil painting and watercolour "en plein air"

This course deals with oil painting. Its chemical characteristics and the workshop preparation of oil colours using basic materials will be illustrated. The characteristics of commercial products will also be studied . An introduction is given to methods, aids and tools, their selection and application. We will also learn the different ways of preparing a canvas and other different supports for oil painting. The lessons will mainly be held in the fascinating places surrounding Sorano, where students will be allowed to sketch and paint various subjects of natural, archaeological and historical interest All materials will be provided by the school.

Course in trompe-l'oeil

Draperies, floral decoration, landscapes, fruits, gardens, columns, capitals and marbling, are some of the possible subjects to be carried out through the technique of decorative painting known as trompe l'oeil. Students will learn by a large range of techniques the method of reproducing chosen decorations on different surfaces, e.g., walls, canvas, paper, wood, etc. Pictures and slides will be used to reproduce the decorations.

Course in fresco painting

Fresco is one of the most ancient painting techniques, widely used in Medieval and Renaissance periods, until Tiepolo. It presents some difficulties but it offers, on the other hand, extraordinary possibilities of quality of light and tone. Students will individually carry out each stage of the process, following traditional methods and using original materials (earth, glue, egg-yolk, wax etc.). We will also look at the preparation of the surface, preparation of the cartoons, dusting, preparation of the paints, techniques of fixing and polishing the paints. During the course excursions will be made to see some of the greatest masterpieces of this art.

Course in still life drawing

This course teaches drawing techniques as a means of achieving graphic representation of a real, visible object. Through a gradual analysis of the subject, the elements of which it is made up will be singled-out and reproduced: material, composition, tone and prospective. We will look at the diverse graphic techniques (graphite, charcoal, ink) applied on various types of paper.
