Jewellery course : cold forging, cuttlefish bone casting, wax carving

The course allows to be introduced and practice three different jewellery techniques. Each of these techniques can be the focus of a single specifical course.

THE COLD FORGING TECHNIQUE:the workshop will focus on the realization of basic hammered shapes. We will start with an analysis of the different metals that can be cold forged followed by a demonstration of the fundamental plastic deformations that can be imparted to a metal bar by means of different hammers and stakes.
Now each student will forge his own piece getting acquainted with the use of the hammer and the results of each blow.
Students will master cold forging techniques enough to develop personalized and unexpected forms.
A great advantage of the technique is the creation of finished articles in a very short time, with an immediate feedback for the student.

THE CUTTLEFISH BONE CASTING: the workshop will focus on the casting of small objects using cuttlefish bone molds. We will start with some historical notions on this ancient technique and its use in more recent times.
A demonstration of the traditional method of replication by impression will follow, highlighting its basic points: the positioning of the model, the excavation of gate, the use of vents etc.
At this point each student can prepare his own bone mold and cast it, so that possible mistakes will be corrected and FAQs answered.

MODELLING AND CARVING BY WAX AND FUSION "cire perdue":

the course covers the designing and reproducing of a piece of jewelry step by step. Students will be taught how to make various objects (horoscope-mefroms, signet rings, slave bracelets) under the guidance of the teacher; the goldsmithery is first designed and produced in wax, then fused in metal, following precise instructions according to the material used (wax, silver, gold, stones) and the correct use of instruments is applied to avoid technical-aesthetic problems. The modeling and fusion of jewels allows valuable pieces to be produced in a very short period of time, owing to the special versatility of these techniques.

CLASSES ON SINGLE MATTERS:

- wax carving (cire perdue)
students works

- chasing

The forging of bracelets, rings, necklaces etc. and other objects such as crochet needles, pens, knives, spoons etc. will be explored, analyzing also their functional and aesthetic aspects.
Metalsmithing (quotation)
Goldsmiths, silversmiths and blacksmiths all use hammers to shape metal by forging, raising, sinking and forming. These age-old techniques are the basis of making metal objects of all sizes, including jewelry. Take this class and learn the basics of smithing, using several types of hammers. You will complete a series of functional and ornamental projects in copper and/or silver.
The main theme is the "plasticity of metal", to be explored through hand raising and hand forging

- cuttlefish bone casting

Working with free-form carving will next be considered, along with more complex techniques: the casting of sheet and tubing, of married metals, the inclusion of stones and glass, the assembly of three-piece molds etc.
The results will range from fine precision replicas of a model to free form shapes and controlled textural effects by the use of differently oriented layers of the bone.
Advanced students may incorporate in their works stone setting, chasing, engraving, etc.

Course on Sculpture on clay

From the classic approach to the different methods of contemporary art, the various aspects of sculpture will be illustrated, together with the corresponding "consciousness" of shapes and materials involved in each of them. The course covers the basic notions of drawing and project of a tridimensional shape: the relationship between drawing and volume, real space and perception. Starting from preliminary drawings, a bas-relief and a tridimensional portrait in clay will be realized upon the guidance of the tutor. During the course visits to the "Giardino dei Tarocchi" by Niki de Saint Phalle in Capalbio and the Park of sculpture by Daniel Spoerri in Seggiano (Mount Amiata) will be done by the group.

The Bronzetto - Modelling in wax for bronze and silver casting

A training course designed for those who wish to acquire or increase their creative capacities to produce small - scale sculptures. The proposed course will be developed progressively step-by-step and tailored to the capabilities of the participants, from beginners to to those of more advanced skill. The course provides for continuous individual guidance in overcoming problems in realising projects requiring semi-complex and complex manual techniques. Together with theoretical instruction, the programme covers a full range of practical aspects: framework preparation, modelling, finishing processes and mounting on wood or stones bases. While materials and basic equipment are available in the workshop, casting is carried out in an external foundry; the works thus produced being subsequently sent on the participant's address.
