LAMPWORKING WITH MURANO GLASS

Lampworking allows the making of a great variety of shapes, without having to return it to the melting pot for its fusion: lamp working is the softening of glass rod and tubing by heating it in the flame of a blow lamp.

If interested in doing the courses in different periods, please let us know: we will take notice and inform you on availability

Course on beads making

The softened glass is formed into a finished piece by manipulating it by hand and shaping it with hand tools. In this hands-on introductory week-long class, we will have an overview of lampworking skills and feature surface decoration. Various techniques will be demonstrated and discussed including millefiori powdering, raking, canetwist and metal inclusion. At the end of the day the work will be joined with leather, string or metal into beautiful jewelry. Basic information about glass, tools and studio set-up is also covered. Students are encouraged to experiment.
All the students will work on their own flame; they will be able to keep all the pieces at the end of the course.

Course on modelling solid sculptures and blowing with lamp working

The softened glass is formed into a finished piece by blowing or manipulating it by hand and shaping it with hand tools. During the lessons small objects will be made, such as animals, insects, cruets, small figures, murrine, etc., gold and silver inserts. Later on some more complex objects will be produced using four hands - the teacher and the student.
Basic information about glass, tools and studio set-up is also covered. Together with a survey of the various artistic application students are encouraged to experiment.
All the students will work on their own flame; they will be able to keep all the pieces at the end of the course.

COURSES ON GLASS-FUSING

Basic course

Flat plate glass can be re-worked in the kiln taking on new forms and colours particular to this art: plates, bowls, vases, sheets for windows, lamps, doors, etc. Work is carried out in the following phases: cutting of sheets (colored and transparent); building up of forms by overlying sheets; preparation of moulds in fiber and terracotta; use of colours and glazes, firing, and working with molten glass. Each phase of the process is preceded by an introduction to the properties of the material and its various states in the kiln (daily progression). All the students will work on their own projects, which they will be able to keep at the end of the course.

Landscapes in Fused Glass: Basic Miriam Di Fiore Technique
Requirements: Intermediate knowledge and experience in glass fusing.

Beginning with a winter woodland image chosen by the
instructor, the student will learn to “translate” a landscape image into glass. The
instructor will demonstrate the basic process used in creating her pieces. Bullseye
sheet glass and frit will be used in a layering process to create the landscape.
Vitrograph stringers will be made, worked with a torch and used in the piece. The
student will follow the process step by step to get the entire image translated into a
flat glass piece with depth and an extremely realistic effect. A second image will be
chosen by the group and created from photos provided by the instructor. Both pieces
should be complete by the end of the course.
